Opera in the Schools
Opera Steamboat partners with Opera Colorado’s Young Artists to bring opera productions to schools in Routt and Moffat Counties. These semi-staged costumed performances are offered to schools on a “pay what you can” basis, with many provided full scholarship assistance. The immersive experience includes activity and study guides for teachers to prepare students as well as a talk back with the performers and students following the production.
In 2016, the touring production of Bizet’s Carmen was performed for the students of Oak Creek.
March of 2017, was Opera Steamboat’s largest partnership to date. Donizetti’s The Elixir of Love and Rossini’s The Barber of Seville were presented to over 600 youth in three different schools throughout Routt County.
Each summer over 30 young artists come to Steamboat Springs for a 3 week long intensive program of coaching and performance from world renowned vocal instructors and performers. During this session several of the vocal masterclasses are open to the public. Attendees witness the process between coach and student for a piece to become performance ready.
Beginning in 2017, Opera Steamboat’s Artistic Director will host masterclasses specifically for aspiring artists within the community. Vocalists receive hands on coaching on their chosen piece which will include vocal and performance technique.
Opera Steamboat’s summer festival includes a series of free community presentations hosted by our Artistic Director, Andres Cladera and our Opera Artist Institute performers. Patrons are offered an in depth look at the upcoming opera program with a discussion on the story line and composers as well as insight into our process of putting a the production together from start to finish. Seasoned patrons as well as new comers will enjoy the discussion and leave with a new perspective on the world of opera.
